Hygienic Design for Sterile Process Environments

Five reasons sanitary electromagnetic flowmeters outperform traditional measurement in food and pharma

True Sanitary Construction With No Product Contact Dead Legs

Fully drainable design with smooth internal surfaces, electropolished to Ra ≤0.4 μm (15 μin). No gaskets, crevices, or dead legs where product can accumulate. Tri-clamp connections enable complete disassembly for inspection and validation.

  • Meets 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG hygienic design guidelines

Withstand Aggressive Cleaning and Steam Sterilization Cycles

PTFE/PFA liners resist caustic cleaners, acidic sanitizers, and high-temperature steam. Rated for 130°C SIP cycles and pH 1-14 cleaning chemicals. Electrodes and body materials maintain integrity through thousands of CIP/SIP cycles without degradation.

  • 130°C SIP rated—handles steam sterilization without calibration drift

All Product-Contact Materials Meet FDA Food-Grade Requirements

316L electropolished stainless steel body, PTFE/PFA liner, and 316L electrodes comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 and EC 1935/2004. Material certifications and traceability documentation provided with each meter for validation and audit purposes.

  • Complete material traceability for pharmaceutical validation requirements

Minimize Installation Space in Densely Packed Process Skids

Compact tri-clamp design occupies 40-50% less space than flanged sanitary flowmeters. Lightweight construction (2-8 kg depending on size) simplifies skid assembly and reduces structural support requirements. Ideal for modular processing equipment and portable systems.

  • 40-50% space reduction versus flanged sanitary meters

Tool-Free Removal for Multi-Product Manufacturing Lines

Tri-clamp ferrule removal in seconds without wrenches or special tools. Critical for facilities running multiple products requiring equipment changeover between batches. Swap meters, inspect seals, or perform maintenance during scheduled downtime without production delays.

  • Seconds for removal—enables rapid changeover in multi-product facilities

Hygienic installation in three steps: positioning, connection, commissioning

Step 1: System Positioning

  • Orientation: Install horizontally or vertically (upward flow preferred). Avoid air entrapment at high points. Position for complete drainage during CIP.
  • Straight Pipe: Minimum 3D upstream, 2D downstream. Compact requirements enable tight skid integration.
  • Access: Ensure tri-clamp ferrule accessible for removal without disturbing adjacent piping.

Step 2: Tri-Clamp Connection

  • Slide tri-clamp ferrules onto pipe ends
  • Position gasket between ferrule faces (ensure proper centering)
  • Install tri-clamp band and tighten evenly

Gasket Selection: Match gasket material to process fluid and temperature. EPDM standard; Viton for oils/fats; PTFE for high-purity.

Alignment: Verify flow direction arrow matches process flow. Electrode orientation not critical (self-compensating).

Step 3: Electrical & Commissioning

  • Power: Connect AC or DC power per voltage rating. Converter may be integrated or remotely mounted (split configuration).
  • Grounding: Ground flowmeter to facility ground. Non-conductive gaskets may require grounding rings.
  • Zero Calibration: Fill pipe with static process fluid. Execute zero adjustment. Verify <0.1% of full scale.
  • CIP Verification: Run CIP cycle. Verify cleanliness. Confirm zero stability post-cleaning.

Critical Requirements

  • Drainage: Install with slight slope for complete drainage. Eliminate low points where product can pool.
  • Air Elimination: Avoid high points. Provide air bleed if required by process piping configuration.
  • CIP Flow: Ensure CIP flow rate sufficient to clean electrode surfaces (minimum 1.5 m/s velocity recommended).
